Artifact
1 - Nature Of Science Worksheet
"What is Nature of Science?" I will admit I still ask myself about the specifics of the nature of science, but I’m sure I always will. Nature of Science has become ingrained in my mind and I could not plan without it. It helps me to incorporate what everyday scientists do in real life to my classroom when we are doing science. It helps me to see what science should look like and when I envision a “perfect science lesson," it actually includes many aspects of the nature of science. I feel that with the nature of science involved in every lesson, students feel more connected to scientists around the world, but as teachers we need to make this connection for them. If students are not aware of who real scientists are and what they do, they will not feel like science is meaningful and may not even continue in a science field. The aspects of the Nature of Science include:

Artifact 2 - Science? Or not Science?
One of the first days of class, we got a worksheet and we were to check whether we thought each scenario was science or not. Well, this seemed easy right? Wrong. As we went along I found myself thinking that science was in EVERYTHING. I wrote down connections to some of them to justify why I thought that they were science. After our class discussion, we all realized that not everything is science! Teaching science needs to have a purpose, or an objective. We need to be purposeful in our planning and implementing otherwise we are not doing science and science is not happening. The three legs of science must be included in every lesson in order to be doing science in the classroom. The three legs are content, process skills, and the nature of science (Weinburgh, 2003). This document serves to remind me that in order to teach science in my classroom, I need to be purposeful in my planning and implemeting, otherwise my students are not getting the science that they need and deserve.
